I'd forgotten how often we saw Magritte

Deja vu, all over again...

from cnn.com:

The president is trying to avoid the fate of his father, former President George H.W. Bush, who won a war in the Middle East only to be turned out of office in 1992 amid a sluggish economy.

I KNEW we'd seen this movie before.
  • It's easier to "free" foreigners (Kuwaiti, Iraqi) than it is to help your own citizens, apparently.

I smell more tax cuts for retired CEOs.
  • It’s kind of funny, actually — here the Republicans are trying to stay in office by using wars, which they know are a proven way to boost approval ratings. And in the meantime, they’re ignoring the much more apropos knowledge that voters hardly ever willingly swap out presidents when the economy is high.

So they’re taxing us to death to pay for the war effort, and then getting booted. (For contrast, note that it was impossible to get Clinton out of office, precisely because the economy was doing so well. Re-election? Practically a cake-walk. Impeachment effort? For all the frenzied moral hysteria on the Republican side fo the aisle in Washington, the voters all went, “Hey, he’s running the country pretty well, and I’ve got a good job and enough money. Where he puts his cigar doesn’t really concern me.”

There’s a lot the Democrats seem to need to learn from the Republicans these days (like, how to actually formulate a position and stick with it, and how to set the terms of the public discourse instead of just following along), but it’s nice to see that there’s something the Reps need to learn from the Dems.

  • :-(

Too bad this Bush will be re-elected.
    • Re: :-(

I'm not so sure- his dad looked like a total shoe-in when he went and beat the crap out of Iraq the last time and chased them out of Kuwait, but less than a year later...
