I'd forgotten how often we saw Magritte

...that I'm sick of hearing about the media being a fucking 'liberal tool':

Read closely this story from the New York Times Magazine, and tell me that this is not telling us 'oh you should just be ready to accept curtailings of your liberties happily! it's for your own good!' George Orwell would have quivered with distaste at this story. Aldous Huxley is probably up there in heaven looking down and going 'shit shit shit and I don't get to re-draft Brave New World again, I'm DEAD. Damnit!'.

Ah, Santayana, you were talking to an empty house, apparently. And we're doomed to repeat it, since we refuse to learn from it.
  • God, that's frightening.
  • Within a week or two of the 9/11 attacks I thought that the only measure to directly stop terrorism is to install a world wide totalitarian state, and, well, guess what.
  • There's a brand-new subway stop, the one I use to get to work, on 72nd St - opened just a couple of months ago.

Ever since it opened, about once or twice a week I'll see a police bus - a full sized NYPD bus labeled 'Hazmat' - parked out there, and cops in gear rushing out into the subway stop.

Now, on second thought, walking through that brand new subway stop: I can't see the radiation detector and the camera, but I can see where they are, and the large pipe of cables running out of that install. NY Times reports that some poor guy getting I-131 radioactive therapy for thyroid cancer got shaken down "in a subway stop" a couple of months ago.

    I think this battle's lost.
