On this day:
1880: Joshua Abraham Norton, Emperor of the United States & Protector of Mexico, passed away at the corner of California and Grant.

1935: Elvis Aaron Presley born.

1947: David Robert Jones born. in the late 1960s, Mr. Jones changed his surname to Bowie, to avoid confusion with a member of the Monkees.

Some year after that: nicolascaesar born.
  • All hail Emperor Norton.

    • In case the news hasn't made its way out there; the SF City Council has OKed renaming the Oakland/San Francisco Bay Bridge the Emperor Joshua Norton Bridge, and the Oakland City Council seems to be game as well.
    • That is so cool.
    • ...

No! I hadn't heard. Oh, god, that fucking RULES.

      Oh, man. That...fucking rules.

      That really rules.

I'm just speechless on how much that rules.

      Giddy like Dieter.

      • I'm just hoping we get it, 'cause I would LOVE to have a major national bridge named after a historical madman.
Of course, part of the reason for the rename is because one of the various proclamations of the Emperor was the building of a bridge across the bay. :)
  • Have you ever read the Sandman comic? They did an issue about Emperor Norton.
    • Yep!
Norton's been a character I've admired since I was like 8 and first found out about him- through a dessert at the Ghirardelli ice cream shop, which they no longer make.
  • I thought Emperor Norton was a fictional character. The only time I've read any mention of him was in Bloodsucking Fiends by Christopher Moore. Had no idea it was an actual person.
  • Oh, and Presley's middle name was "Aron", not "Aaron".

Johnny Bravo is set in Aron City; Johnny's voice is a Presley imitation.
    • I was about to post the same thing. It's always bugged me, that missing A in his middle name.

Though, strangely enough, his tombstone spells his middle name with two A's. And, according to Wikipedia, so did his birth certificate.
      • Wikipedia is, in fact, where I got his middle name (I couldn't remember it for the life of me).
