I'd forgotten how often we saw Magritte

I'm stealing this from scanner_darkly who stole it from djcrowley who stole it from someone else.

You know, these 'meme' things are always "enough about me...let's talk about me!" but this one has to do with MUSIC too.

What songs, if any, remind you of me? UPDATE: I kind of am asking for specific songs here, because it's a bit hard to make a playlist that is 'Bowie songs'. Yeah, I'm a Bowie fanatic, but which Bowie makes you think of me, as opposed to just thinking 'oh he likes Bowie'?

scanner_darkly suggests (and I agree) that it would be pretty interesting to have a playlist to listen to that's nothing but the songs people answer this question with.
  • Bowie, "Queen Bitch". But in a good way. I think that this is simply because it's one of my favorite Bowie songs, especially to drum along to, and Bowie --> colubra.

Pet Shop Boys, "Heart", because of your heart trouble

Honorable mention: Pet Shop Boys' "Opportunities" reminds me of Stewie Griffin, which reminds me of you because of your icon. The song reminds me of Stewie because I realized the other day, after watching both Family Guy and PSB videos on DVD, that it'd be just perfect for him.
  • Anything David Bowie does makes me think of you. Anything.

    • Pick one or two especially, though? Kinda hard to fit the above into a playlist. ;)
(and to you, gentle reader: I edited the base post to reflect requests for specifics after this post went up: don't think indigoskynet can't read).
      • There's this pretty instrumental called Warsaw that Bowie does that makes me think of you. It's very serene and soothing. But somehow it's also sad and and pensive.

But to go the other way, Let's Dance reminds me of you, too. I think it's because of the image of Bowie himself falling through your skylight.

        • TMI cometh.

Warzawa- it's off of the album 'Low', which was cowritten with Brian Eno. It definitely shows Eno's influence all the hell over the place, especially in the side that's all instrumentals (many of the tracks have a very simple vocal component). One of my favorite Bowie songs, too. :)
  • Not one particular song so much as a band: (Oingo) Boingo... because you were the one who played some at a party at your place and turned me back on to them after many years of not really paying much attention (just busy with other stuff, I suppose). And, of course, Bowie. Double duh :)
    • Huh. I had forgotten entirely about that with the Mystic Knights of the Oingo-Boingo. Any track in particular leap to mind?
And same with the Bowie: any track in particular leap to mind?
(and to you, gentle reader: I edited the base post to reflect requests for specifics after this post went up: don't think strontium90 can't read).
      • Upon a moment or two's reflection:

Bowie - Watch That Man, Loving The Alien (hrm, yanno, after telling scanner_darkly that The Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead reminded me of him, I'm starting to wonder if I'm stuck on martyr imagery... perhaps my responses are more telling of *me*)

Oingo Boingo - Grey Matter and/or Gratitude... I just love the lyrics, and the words remind me of the kinds of things you'd say :)
  • Because of the month I spent on that ginormous couch you used to have, waking up in the morning and listening to you sing in the shower, every time I hear this song I think of you:

"I'm Only Happy When It Rains" - Garbage

However, there are others that remind me of you for more personal reasons:

"The Jeweler" - This Mortal Coil, for very personal reasons.
"Overground" - Siouxsie and the Banshees (the version from the Thorn EP with the orchestra) - something about the haunting elegance of this one reminds me of you.

    ...and of course,
"John, I'm Only Dancing" by...well, you'll have to rack your brain to figure out what singer does this song ;)
    • "John, I'm Only Dancing" by...well, you'll have to rack your brain to figure out what singer does this song ;)

I first encountered this song through the Chameleons UK cover version. So if colubra is making a mix/playlist of all these and there's too much actual Bowie ("blasphemy!", says a small voice), you could use that cover instead.

I originally typed "mix tape" but apparently some of the kids today have moved beyond the format.
  • You probably think this meme is about you, don't you? Don't you?

"You're So Vain" by Carly Simon
    • Re: You probably think this meme is about you, don't you? Don't you?

This is the first one I have to wonder whyyyyy someone is reminded of me by it. Or perhaps your tongue is just in cheek and I missed that. ;)
      • Re: You probably think this meme is about you, don't you? Don't you?

In cheek. The cheek in my mouth, that is.
  • Elvis Costello.. pretty much anything, really. Yeah, I know, you can't fit that in a playlist.

    So, going another direction...

Lola, for some of the stories you tell of things overheard.

"So she says to me she says.."
  • Chelsea Monday by Marillion.
  • Kate, 'All The Love.' For obvious reasons.
